Reef 2050 Catchment Water Quality Strategy
We continue to take strong action to improve the quality of water flowing to the Great Barrier Reef.
The Reef 2050 Catchment Water Quality Strategy is the Australian and Queensland Government’s new framework to improve the quality of water flowing to the Reef.
The strategy supersedes the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan.
It will:
- build on significant efforts that have improved Reef water quality
- deliver more targeted approaches
- address the broad range of water quality challenges across the 35 major catchments
- foster stronger collaboration and connections between people, land, and water.
The strategy includes water quality targets that:
- are ecologically relevant, directly linking to how the Reef ecosystem functions and what it needs to remain healthy
- reflect current land-use practices
- are tailored to the unique conditions of the 35 catchments flowing into the Reef.
The targets have been set against a 2023 baseline and are to be achieved by 2032.
The strategy is underpinned by the latest science and evidence. It is informed by extensive consultation with experts, landholders and other stakeholders.
The strategy is supported by the Spatial Management Prioritisation framework. The framework helps water quality project partners:
- identify priority areas
- understand pollutant pressures
- tailor management responses to local conditions.
The Australian Government continues to invest significantly in Reef water quality programs. These programs have reduced sediment and nutrient run off. They have supported improved land management and healthy habits.
New programs will build on these efforts. They will support progress towards our water quality targets into the future.
