The National Inventory Report fulfils Australia’s international greenhouse gas inventory reporting requirements.
The National Inventory Report 2020 contains:
- national greenhouse gas emission estimates for the period 1990 to 2020
- preliminary estimates for 2021.
This report follows United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Kyoto Protocol reporting rules. We submitted it to the UNFCCC in May 2022.
The report covers the final year of Australia’s 2020 targets under the Cancun Agreement and Kyoto Protocol Second Commitment Period.
An independent UNFCCC expert review team reviewed Australia’s emissions estimates for 1990 to 2020 in line with UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol processes. Estimates are considered finalised after this review.
Update
Following the UNFCCC expert review of the National Inventory Report in September 2022, the emission estimates have been updated and finalised and are available at the Australian National Greenhouse Accounts.
The update adjusts emissions from stationary energy – Manufacturing Industries and Construction and equates to less than 0.1 per cent of Australia’s emissions in 2019 and 2020.
