The Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA) program is continuing and expanding. Additional IPA funding will be delivered over 5 years from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2028. This includes 12-month transition funding for existing IPA projects from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024.
The increased funding will:
The IPA program will contribute towards achieving our international obligations under the Global Biodiversity Framework. This includes the target to protect and conserve 30% of the world’s land and 30% of the world’s marine areas by 2030 (30 by 30). The Australian Government has adopted this global 30 by 30 target for Australia. IPAs will play a key role in achieving the 30 by 30 target in Australia.
We are committed to strengthening the IPA program, including through:
- supporting our shared and developing understanding of First Nation-led approaches to achieving, environmental, cultural, social and economic outcomes
- building stronger relationships between IPA providers, communities, NIAA and DCCEEW
- reducing administrative complexity and streamlining reporting requirements
- supporting the development and review of Plans of Management
- providing technical and other expertise as needed.
