Welcome to the National Waste Data Viewer.

This instructional video shows how to navigate the Data Viewer and interact with charts and data.

Let’s get started.

The Overview page displays headline waste and resource recovery figures by financial year, and the percentage change compared to the previous year.

On the ribbon at the top, you’ll find filters that let you search by jurisdiction and by financial year.

These filters adjust the figures in the three tables on the left-hand side of the screen. The top table shows waste generation, recycling, and resource recovery. 

The middle table shows data by source stream.\

The bottom table gives figures by material category.

On the right, we have the National Waste Action Plan targets, and you can read more about the Action plan by clicking on this link.

Below the three left-hand side tables there is a link to see the map of non-hazardous waste Facilities.

At the bottom of viewer are six navigational buttons. Each button will take you to a different page of the viewer.

Or you can use the next buttons at the bottom of the page. Okay, next page.

The Snapshot page shows yearly trend information for waste generation and resource recovery across material category and streams.

You can filter by core waste plus ash or core waste, and you’ll see the data on the page changes.

In short, core waste plus ash shows total waste and resource recovery figures and are used for measuring how Australia is progressing against national waste targets.  Core waste shows figures relating to the waste sector only.

Headline figures are displayed in the four cards across the top of the page. We have Waste generated, waste recovered, recovery rate and recycling rate. These will match the reporting year selected in the Financial year drop down filter. 
Underneath the cards are three charts.

The first chart shows the amount of waste generated over time, overlaid with the  resource recovery rate trend line. Waste generated each year is further broken down to the amount sent to disposal, and recovery fates.

The second chart shows the amount of waste generated by material category for the year selected in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

The third chart presents the resource recovery rate and recycling rate for each waste stream over time.

Across each page, chart views and headline figures are set by the inbuilt filters in the top right-hand corner. You can filter by Jurisdiction and financial year.

The material category page shows a more detailed analysis by material category.

Just like the overview page, this page also includes filters. They are jurisdiction, waste material category and financial year.

Let’s have a look at filtering a chart by individual material category. If you click on organics. The chart and headline figures in the four cards at the top change to this selection.

By hovering over the Sankey diagram visual on the right, you can see the waste fate figures by disposal, recycling and energy recovery.

Let’s move onto the stream report page. On the navigation pane select stream.

The stream page shows more detailed analysis by waste stream.

The stream page can be filtered three ways:

• by jurisdiction,
• by stream
• by financial year.

It also includes a decomposition tree which has three columns to analyse data, by fate, by jurisdiction and by stream.

This report page introduces pathway analysis of total waste generation.

The data can be viewed in either chart or table views. The table button provides a table view of waste generation by stream.

The default view is the decision tree chart. 

Let’s focus on the decision tree chart. This chart enables you to conduct analysis over total waste generation. The data is broken into stream, fate, and jurisdiction. Click on the plus symbol button next to the data bar and choose stream, fate or jurisdiction.

Let’s expand total core waste by clicking on the plus button and select stream. Click on stream.

This shows the amount of waste generated across the three streams and clicking on any of the plus symbols next to each stream will further expand the information displayed.  Click on the cross to remove the existing selection.

To view in full screen, click on the focus button.

The Facilities page shows non-hazardous and hazardous waste management and resource recovery facilities in Australia in an interactive map.

The default view will show non-hazardous waste and resource recovery facilities. To change the view to show hazardous waste and resource recovery facilities click on the button labelled Hazardous.

There are also three filter options above the map which allow users to narrow down the facilities displayed on the map by management type, infrastructure type and jurisdiction.

You can find a facility on the map by clicking and dragging your mouse or scrolling down the list of facilities below the map.

Selecting a management type from the filter options above the map will highlight those facilities on the map and in the table below. Clicking on a blank space on the map will clear your selection. 

Clicking on an individual facility in the list below will navigate to that facility on the map.

Hovering your mouse over a facility on the map will display the facility type, geographical coordinates and the facility name. Clicking on the facility will display the full details of the facility in the list below.

You can zoom in or out on the map by clicking the plus and minus button on the map itself.

To increase the size of the map, users can enter ‘focus mode’ which will expand the map to near full screen. To do this, find the ‘focus mode’ button located under the jurisdiction filter menu which looks like a square within a square and click on it.  You can also increase the size of the table by clicking on the focus mode button underneath the map, at the bottom right corner.

The ‘about the data’ page includes more information about data in the viewer.

This viewer was built using waste data set collected in 2006–07 through to our most recent data set collected in 2018–19.

It also includes the data from the national database of non-hazardous waste management and resource recovery facilities in Australia.
