In southern Victoria, the latest National Water Grid project to finish construction is helping the local region to thrive.

The Recycled Water on the Bellarine project will nearly double the amount of recycled water available to the region.

This will help save drinking water and improve the health of local waterways.

Local farmers and businesses will have access to up to 450 million litres of additional recycled water each year for agricultural and other uses.

Construction included the installation of new ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis infrastructure and the connection of an 11 km pipeline. This construction upgrades the existing Portarlington Water Reclamation Plant.

These changes will help:

  • improve water quality and volume
  • take pressure off locals who have been faced with seasonal water supply issues and uncertainty.

As added benefits, the project will:

  • create more jobs for locals
  • preserve the region’s stunning landscape
  • improve liveability.

The Australian Government provided $5.5 million to the project through the National Water Grid Fund. The Victorian Government contributed $2 million and Barwon Water provided $17.5 million.
