Phase 1 of the National Water Grid Gove Peninsula Water Supply Upgrade is now complete.

The $12 million project includes work in Yirrkala:

  • upgrades to ageing water infrastructure
  • replacement of 5.6 km of ageing water pipeline and 197 service connections.

It also includes planning and assessment work to support long-term water security in Gunyangara. This will be delivered through the second phase of the project.

Regional benefits

The upgrades will improve water reliability, reduce water loss and increase capacity in the network. This will help support future housing and community development.

The project also created local employment opportunities. Regional Aboriginal business enterprise Bukmuk Constructions delivered the construction works. This supported around 6 local jobs and economic participation in the region.

Funding

The project is funded by the Australian Government and the Northern Territory Government. Australian Government funding is provided through the National Water Grid Fund. The project was delivered in partnership with Power and Water Corporation.

Phase 2

Planning and assessment work completed during Phase 1 has paved the way for the Gove Peninsula Water Supply Upgrade Phase 2.

Phase 2 is a $17.2 million joint investment from:

  • the Australian Government, through the National Water Grid Fund
  • the Northern Territory Government
  • Gumatj Corporation.
