Warmun community birds eye view of solar panels on roofs

The Australian Government is supporting a solar program in remote parts of Western Australia.

The Kimberley Communities Solar Saver program, run by Horizon Power, is helping people save money on electricity.

More than $185,000 in energy savings has been delivered so far, with around 435 homes now part of the program. Each household saves about $450 a year on average.

The program installs solar panels on suitable homes. It then shares this solar power across the community so more people can benefit, including those households that aren’t able to install rooftop solar themselves.

Solar systems have been installed across five communities:

  • Warmun
  • Bidyadanga
  • Ardyaloon
  • Yungngora
  • Beagle Bay

More than 1.3 megawatts of solar power has been installed across about 125 systems.

The solar energy reduces the need for diesel power, which helps lower costs and improve reliability. It also supports a fair energy transition so regional and remote communities can access affordable, clean energy.

The Australian Government is working with the Western Australian Government to deliver the program.

It is funded through the Community Solar Banks initiative.
