Pilot programs

Last updated: 11 July 2025

We established pilot programs to test activities for an environmental market. The activities aim to increase private sector participation in delivering biodiversity outcomes.

The pilot programs are trialling planting protocols and ways to improve existing vegetation.

Both pilots are:

  • testing high-integrity reporting requirements
  • ensuring projects result in genuine environmental benefits
  • informing the Nature Repair Market.

Carbon + Biodiversity and Enhancing Remnant Vegetation pilots

The 2 pilots are:

  • Carbon + Biodiversity (C+B)
  • Enhancing Remnant Vegetation (ERV)

The pilots were formerly called the Agriculture Biodiversity Stewardship Pilots.

The Australian National University (ANU) helped to deliver elements of the pilots, including:

  • rules for participating
  • processes for assessing, reporting and monitoring delivery of environmental outcomes in biodiversity projects.

Carbon + Biodiversity pilot

The C+B pilot is trialling planting protocols that deliver biodiversity improvements and carbon abatement.

Other benefits from plantings include:

  • shelter for stock or other animals
  • protecting dams and waterways
  • reducing soil erosion.

Find out more about our Carbon + Biodiversity pilot.

Enhancing Remnant Vegetation pilot

The ERV pilot encourages landholders to improve existing vegetation on their property.

Participants are funded for a range of relevant activities including:

  • installing fencing
  • carrying out weeding
  • pest control
  • supplementary planting.

Find out more about our Enhancing Remnant Vegetation pilot.

Independent review of the pilots

We commissioned an independent review of the pilots, formerly known as the Agriculture Biodiversity Stewardship Pilots. The review was undertaken from December 2022 to May 2023. It covers the establishment phase of the pilots. The aim was to identify lessons applicable to the development and implementation of the Nature Repair Market.

The review highlights:

  • various barriers to entry for landholders
  • opportunities to better enable landholder participation in environmental markets.
