Governments and local government agencies, conservation non-government organisations, community groups, multinational organisations, individual farmers and Indigenous communities are working together to build the protected area network.
Everyone has a part to play, from purchasing property or adding land that is already owned, to placing a conservation covenant on part of a working farm. The reserve system cannot be built solely on government-owned lands such as national parks, nor can it be managed without wide community support.
Investment to date and ongoing management
The National Reserve System is one of the world's great conservation partnerships. Under Caring for our Country, the Australian Government committed $180 million to build the National Reserve System over the five years to 2013.
Further opportunities may exist under the Green Army, the 20 Million Trees Initiative and the National Landcare Programme to assist in the management of existing NRS properties.
Government agencies
Local councils as well as states and territories are building protected areas in some of the country's most stunning landscapes.
Conservation organisations
Non-government conservation organisations are the fastest growing sector building the National Reserve System.
Community groups
Community groups such as trusts, friends of a national park, or groups of volunteers can band together to protect a valued local environment.
Private landholders

Indigenous landholders
Indigenous landholders have made the single greatest contribution to building the National Reserve System.
