Heritage Chairs and Officials of Australia and New Zealand

The Heritage Chairs and Officials of Australia and New Zealand were previously known as the Standing Committee for the Heritage Ministers Ministerial Council from 1996 to 2001. In 2003 New Zealand became a standing member of Chairs and Officials and subsequently, the group became known as the Heritage Chairs and Officials of Australia and New Zealand (HCOANZ).

In May 2018 the Committee broadened its scope to include consideration of Indigenous heritage matters. The Committee now includes Chairs and Officials from each Indigenous Heritage Council from every state and territory.

The group meets twice a year, generally in the first and last quarters of the year. The group's membership consists of the Chair of the Commonwealth, state / and territory heritage councils and the manager / director of each associated heritage government agency, including similar representatives from New Zealand. Secretariat support is provided by the Heritage, Reef and Wildlife Trade Division of the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment.

Dhawura Ngilan: A vision for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage in Australia and the Best Practice Standards in Indigenous cultural heritage management and legislation

On 16 September 2020, the Heritage Chairs of Australia and New Zealand welcomed and supported Dhawura Ngilan: A vision for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage in Australia and the Best Practice Standards in Indigenous cultural heritage management and legislation. Developed by and presented to the meeting by the Chairs of Australia’s national, state and territory Indigenous heritage bodies, these two documents provide a roadmap for improving approaches to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage management in Australia. Both documents are the product of extensive consultation with Indigenous stakeholders and relevant peak advisory bodies.

  • Dhawura Ngilan: A vision for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage in Australia and the Best Practice Standards in Indigenous cultural heritage management and legislation

The Vision and the Standards were subsequently discussed at the Ministerial Indigenous Heritage Roundtable on 21 September 2020.

Darwin Statement - Heritage Chairs and Officials of Australia and New Zealand

In May 2018 Heritage Chairs and Officials issued the Darwin Statement, the statement affirms the need to include, engage and collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and share their cultural heritage stories. The Committee now includes Chairs and Officials from each Indigenous Heritage Council from every state and territory.
