The Lake Eyre Basin Intergovernmental Agreement governs management of cross-basin issues. The agreement established two advisory groups:
- Lake Eyre Basin Community Advisory Committee
- Lake Eyre Basin Scientific Advisory Panel
The groups provide valuable community and scientific advice on basin matters. Each group has a distinct role. Yet, they often work together on projects. They work with the Lake Eyre Basin secretariat and the groups' chairs.
Lake Eyre Basin Community Advisory Committee
The committee provides advice to water ministers on basin community matters. This advice supports decisions on managing the basin. Their work may include community consultation, feedback or advising on community matters. The committee represents:
- Aboriginal interests, with a particular focus on water rights
- pastoral and agricultural interests
- mining, petroleum, and other resource extraction
- conservation
- tourism
- matters affecting river systems and other relevant waterways.
Lake Eyre Basin Scientific Advisory Panel
Panel members are scientific experts. They advise basin governments on science matters for management of water and related natural resources. They identify information gaps and propose broad scientific investigations. The panel monitors the basin’s condition through basin rivers assessment activities. Their workplans may change to best support the agreement.
