About the document
The Rock Art Thematic Study was commissioned by the Australian Heritage Council. It was prepared by Professor Jo McDonald and Lucia Clayton from the Centre for Rock Art Research and Management at the University of Western Australia.
The thematic study provides an overview of the diversity and distribution of Aboriginal rock art in Australia. The study also proposes a ranked shortlist of rock art places for possible consideration for inclusion on the National Heritage List (NHL) in accordance with the National Heritage List criteria.
The Thematic Study was prepared as a desktop study making use of published and unpublished sources. There was only limited opportunity to make contact with Aboriginal parties or Corporations during the preparation of the Study. Consultation is an integral element of the Australian Heritage Council assessment process should any of these places be nominated for inclusion in the NHL.
