The Threatened Species Commissioner brings a national focus to conservation efforts. They raise awareness and support for threatened species in the community.
A key responsibility of the Commissioner is to lead implementation of the Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032.
The Commissioner works to bring together research, on-ground action and effective partnerships to achieve the best possible outcomes for our species.
Working together is the best way to help the growing number of native plants and animals facing extinction. The Commissioner invites all Australians to play a part in conservation.
The Threatened Species Commissioner is a non-statutory position (it is not identified in legislation) within the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. This position does not have a regulatory role in the operation of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
About Dr Fiona Fraser
Dr Fiona Fraser is the current Threatened Species Commissioner.
Fiona has a PhD in threatened species and fire ecology in northern Australia. She has worked for the Australian Government for over a decade playing lead roles in:
- Indigenous caring for country and natural resource management
- international environment policy
- the bushfire wildlife recovery response.
Before joining the public service, Fiona worked with First Nations organisations in northern Australia on caring for country programs and joint management of protected areas.
