About this document
The Threatened Species Strategy has explicit objectives, including quantifiable targets for actions to protect and conserve threatened species at Years 3 and 5. This report describes the process for assessing population trajectories of the Strategy’s priority threatened species after the conclusion of Year 3 in 2018, to assess progress against the target that at least ten of the 20 priority bird species and at least ten of the 20 priority mammal species should demonstrate improved population trajectories by the end of Year 3.
The assessment and this report were completed by scientific experts from the National Environmental Science Program Threatened Species Hub, commissioned by the Office of the Threatened Species Commissioner. Most of the assessment findings have been directed into individual scorecards for each priority bird and mammal species (see 20 birds by 2020 and 20 mammals by 2020), while this report provides a description of the methods and analysis, an explanation of the material included in the scorecards, and presents some overall findings.
