About the recovery plan
The recovery plan for Leadbeater’s possum has been made jointly with the Victorian Government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
The plan came into effect on 6 March 2024.
Leadbeater’s possum is listed as Critically Endangered under the EPBC Act and under Victorian legislation.
The recovery plan guides conservation planning for Leadbeater’s possum across its range. It identifies the actions to stop the decline and support the recovery of the species to maximise its chances of long-term survival.
We developed the national recovery plan for Leadbeater’s possum in partnership with the Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action and in consultation with:
- First Nations groups
- environmental groups
- community members
- industry
- species experts.
This recovery plan replaces the 1997 Leadbeater’s Possum Recovery Plan.
