Threat abatement plan

About the plan
Exotic (non-native) rodents have been a major cause of extinction and decline of island biodiversity around the world. They also have the potential to invade many islands that are currently thought to be free of exotic rodents.
This threat abatement plan to reduce the impacts of exotic rodents on biodiversity on Australian offshore islands of less than 100 000 hectares is a framework document that sets out the research, management and other actions necessary to abate the threatening processes.
The threat abatement plan is accompanied by a background document which outlines scientific knowledge on the nature of the threat, and current and prospective approaches to managing the threat.
Review Status
The Minister for the Environment noted a review of the ‘Threat Abatement Plan to reduce the impacts of exotic rodents on biodiversity on Australian offshore islands of less than 100 000 hectares 2009’ on 1 March 2016 and the progress made against its objectives. The Minister agreed that a variation of the 2009 threat abatement plan be drafted to reflect the ongoing degradation of island biodiversity caused by invasive rodents on Australia’s offshore islands.
